6 Helpful Tips I Learned From My Personal Stylist
My sense of style was in dire straits. Leggings and sweatshirts were the norm… for years.
That all changed after hiring a personal stylist for my 40th. And let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I was going to Italy for my birthday and wanted a new look. I fell in love with Alessandra’s aesthetic after finding her online. We connected last year and had months of back-and-forth over email to nail logistics as well as the look I wanted.
Last weekend, I landed in Milan and quickly scurried to my appointment; it was so great to finally meet in person after so many months – she’s literally the sweetest.
And, her style? *Chef’s kiss.* Alessandra had on the most fabulous outfit the day we met – Burberry coat, Max Mara dress, and gorgeous boots. The look was perfectly punctuated by a classic Chanel bag.
After quick intros, she guided me to some great spots – Intimissimi, Max & Co, Rinascente, Sezane and Sandro, among many others.
I picked up a few pieces that I am completely obsessed with. Although I didn’t find everything I wanted, that’s ok; a beautiful wardrobe takes time to curate (maybe even years).
Regardless, after my time with Alessandra, I feel smarter not only about how to shop (which I usually find extremely overwhelming) but I also feel more confident about what looks good on me.
Here are 6 things I learned during my time with her.
My New Style Philosophy
1. Be true to myself… but keep an open mind. I surprised myself by trying on some new silhouettes and patterns I don’t typically gravitate towards, but they were more flattering than I expected.
Although clean lines and a minimalist look still represent my core aesthetic, I’ve learned the importance of giving myself permission to step out of the box (and my own way) at times to embrace the new.
2. Prioritize designers that work. Curating a beautiful wardrobe is WORK! It’s not all rainbows and “Pretty Woman” shopping montages.
In understanding what suits me, I found that certain brands worked best for my body type – like Sandro and Maje.
Rather than getting overwhelmed by the millions of clothing options that exist, I can now narrow my focus down to these brands (among a handful of others). I feel so much relief knowing that I can count on them – more often than not – to carry styles and silhouettes I like.
3. Buy the best and I’ll only cry once. Alessandra wore the most incredible black leather boots the day we met. The craftsmanship was impeccable; they were giving Celine but it turns out, they were from the Italian footwear company, Velasca.
The boots retail for $670 USD, certainly nothing to sneeze at but well worth the investment (she vouched that they’re super duper comfy!). In the past, I’ve bought several pairs of black boots but due to their lackluster quality, they always showed their wear quickly.
I’ve decided to buy a pair of Velascas boots too and I couldn’t be more excited! With the right care, I know they’ll last for years and I can wear them with a ton of outfits (dresses, jeans, etc.) throughout the fall and winter seasons. Investing in quality over quantity is my new M.O.
4. Remember that versatility is key. During my personal shopping session, I learned the importance of prioritizing pieces that have longevity.
I bought this Sandro dress and what I love about it is all the ways I can style it – on its own with a leather jacket (which is how I wore it this past weekend) or with a button down underneath, etc. Pieces that do double-duty are a win-win.
5. Don’t forget about lingerie! I purchased two black lace bras (here and here) and matching undies at Intimissimi.
Buying lingerie was never meant for my husband; it was meant for me. Because when I am wearing it, I carry myself differently; it’s like my own little secret and private confidence boost.
6. Get a tailor. I used to get so annoyed when something didn’t fit me perfectly off the rack (like this past weekend, lol). Truthfully, few things fit most people like that. In getting clothes tailored, they look more custom-made for my body, which conveys just the right level of polish I’m going for.
After my time with Alessandra, I walked away with a fresh new perspective on my sense of style. I am so grateful to her for everything I learned and for really taking me under her wings during this style journey (she was oh so patient with me too). I feel ready to embrace this new chapter of my life!
Funny thing is, I was on the fence for YEARS about getting a stylist. All I can say is, if you’re in the same boat, do yourself a favor and just do it.
It’ll be one of the best investments you ever make in yourself. And if you’re looking for one in Milan, Alessandra is your girl.
