12 Great Travel Films You Just Have to Watch
I am a sucker for a travel film; you know the types. The ones that spotlight a city or country almost like another character in the movie. The kind full of visual delights that leave you yearning for more – to see and experience that particular part of the world firsthand.
That’s how these movies make me feel every time I watch them. And I say, “every time” because I’ve seen each one dozens of times, if not more.
I relish in the joy of a film I’ve seen before, comforted by the sweet nostalgia of the characters I love and, of course, the memorable quotes:
Unthinkably good things can happen even late in the game. It’s such a surprise.
~ Frances in “Under the Tuscan Sun”
There are 12 travel-related films I adore and thought I’d share my personal favorites with you (in no particular order) along with why I love them as much as I do.
So, without further ado, here you go!
1. “Roman Holiday”
Adventure, mischief, and romance in Rome… with Audrey Hepburn? This is the movie that made me fall in love with her and the Italian city. It’s a classic for a reason.
2. “Crazy Rich Asians”
This movie was a love letter to Singapore and its native cuisine. The cast is outrageously beautiful, matched only by the stunning urban scenery.
3. “Under the Tuscan Sun”
I love this sweet movie about living outside our comfort zones and taking risks – it’s a beautiful reminder that each time we do, the pay off can be unexpectedly delightful (especially when it involves moving to Italy!).
4. “Eat Pray Love”
I love this movie because it showed the importance of opening ourselves up to life vs. always trying to control it. But above all, it highlighted the importance of seeing travel as a chance to learn not only about other cultures but about ourselves. It’s resonated with me especially during this particular season of my life.
5. “Up in the Air”
This bittersweet romance showcased (what I found to be) the glamour of traveling (i.e., the insider knowledge on the best rewards, hotels, etc.) but what it did more than anything was remind me that while being a nomad can be adventurous, it’s so important to cultivate a sense of home, wherever I may be.
6. “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
Barcelona! Gaudí! La Marsella! Beautiful places and beautiful people abound in this homage to Barcelona. It helped me see the beauty in saying “yes” to life (but for me, never at the expense of my peace).
7. “Paris Can Wait”
There’s something about this movie that reminded me of films of a bygone era – swept away by the visual romance unfolding on screen (specifically of the French countryside). The simple pleasures of an impromptu roadside picnic and meandering detours give this movie an abundance of charm.
8. “The Devil Wears Prada”
I’ve watched this movie approximately 7,982 times. Not really. But if I actually counted, it’s probably pretty darn close. The sights and sounds of Paris simply never get old. And can we talk about the fashion?! The montage of Andie Sach’s glow up is *chef’s kiss*. “That’s all” (in Miranda Priestly’s voice).
9. “Before” Trilogy
I adore this trilogy, which consists of “Before Sunrise”, “Before Sunset”, and “Before Midnight”. Yes, they are 3 movies but for the purposes of this post, I am grouping them together as one entity. What I love about these movies are their slow and savory pace. The cities they feature – Vienna, Paris, and Messenia – serve as picturesque backdrops to the most delicious and soul-stirring conversations these two lovers have about life and love.
10. “Midnight in Paris”
I love Paris. I mean, what’s not to love? But what makes this movie magical is its ability to transport you to a time when some of the world’s greatest artists and tastemakers convened together in the city of lights; I’m talking about Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, and so many others. Yes, the movie is part fantasy but it has so much heart and beauty, much of it stemming from the location itself.
11. “Chasing Liberty”
Full disclosure: 19 year-old me added this movie to this list and I am not embarrassed, in the slightest, to include it here. It’s a romp of a teen fantasy about self-discovery and love spanning Prague, Venice, Berlin, London. It’s cute and predictable, which is exactly why I love it.
12. “French Kiss”
Oh, look at that. Another movie on this list that takes place in France… So I love everything about this beautiful country; who doesn’t? Well, the movie, “French Kiss,” is no exception. I adore this story about the importance of pushing past our fears and letting go of people and things that simply no longer serve us. When we let go of what we we think we want, the Universe often surprises – and delights – us with something way better. Plus, the scenery of Paris, the French countryside and Riviera only add to how cute this movie is.
There are a couple of other famous travel movies I haven’t seen yet but are on my list to watch, e.g.:
- “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”
- “In Bruges”
- “The Beach”
- “To Rome With Love”
- “Y Tu Mamá También”
What about you – what movies are on your favorites list (or wishlist)?
